Are you planning to planning to use the Hook of Holland - Harwich ferry crossing this summer? Then please note that from April 2017 the rail service to Hook of Holland will be discontinued. The trains will be replaced by a direct metro service to Rotterdam which is scheduled to start operating in September 2017. [Update September 2019: After two years of delays the new metro line has now finally openened.]
A replacement bus service will run between Schiedam train station and Hook of Holland while the work on the new line is taking place. Our experience is that these buses don't have space for bikes. So when you come off the ferry with your bike loaded with holiday gear, the only option you may have is to cycle to the nearest train station.
Cycle routes
Here are two cycle routes that will take you from the Stena Line ferry terminal to train stations in The Hague (26 or 28 km) or Schiedam (29 km) and Rotterdam (36 km). For more information about taking your bike on the train, go to Getting around Holland by rail. Rather than going for the shortest routes, we have chosen bike-friendly, scenic options that follow the numbered cycle network which should be easy to find and quicker.
Once the work has finished, you will be able to travel with your bike on the new metro line. You can take your bicycle free of charge on the Rotterdam metro outside rush hour.
