The green lungs of the city
Parks like the Vondelpark are often called the green lungs of the city. City parks make a city more liveable and healthier. This is probably what a group of rich Amsterdammers around 1865 thought. Together, they decided to invest in the construction of a large park south of the centre. Several years after the opening of the park, the Vondel monument was revealed, in honour of the 17th century writer Joost van den Vondel. And this is how the park got its name.
A place for animals and people
Most Amsterdammers don’t have a back yard. So for them the park is the place to go jogging, walking, to have a barbeque, or to have a leisurely picnic. And there really isn’t a single tourist who skips a visit to the Vondelpark when in Amsterdam. Each year, the park has an impressive 10 million visitors. Thanks to the large circumference of the park (470.000 square metres) you will always be able to find a quiet spot for yourself, despite how busy it is. And this is exactly how the animals feel. In and around the 4700 trees and the many ponds you will run into hedgehogs, squirrels, wrens, song thrushes, and the remarkable green rose-ringed parakeets. Can you hear cows mooing? That means you’re near the cow pasture.
Departure from the Vondelpark location
The Vondelpark is located south of the centre, five minutes walking distance from the Leidseplein and the Museumplein. This means it’s a perfect base from which to explore the city. There are a lot of good cafés and restaurants to choose from in the park, but of course we will start the tour with a free cup of coffee in the A-Bike shop. The Amsterdam Vondelpark Bike Tour departs from our bike rental shop in the Vondelpark 7 days a week at 3 pm.
