From the gentle hills of Limburg to the flat open landscape of Groningen - the Cyclist’s Path takes you from Maastricht in the south to the Wadden Sea in the north through some of Holland’s most sparsely populated regions. At times you pop over the border into Belgium and Germany.
Please note that in 2019 the Cyclist's Path was replaced by Cycling along the Pieterpad. This route also crosses the east of Holland from the St. Pietersberg south of Maastricht to the Wadden Sea at Pieterburen. However, it follows a different route for most of the way. The guide book for the Cyclist's Path is no longer in print. Should you still want to follow the old route, you can download the GPS tracks below. These GPS tracks will no longer be updated.
The changing course of the River Maas, the gigantic boulders left by Ice Age glaciers, used to build the famous megalithic tombs (hunebedden) in Drenthe, the cultivation of peat bogs - the Cyclist’s Path is all about the ever-changing landscape. How was it shaped over time by nature and man? How did the landscape in turn shape the lives of people?
Impressive castles, picturesque windmills and watermills, the Roman town of Nijmegen, the modern architecture of Groningen - there are many places of cultural and historic interest to enjoy on the route. It also takes you through various areas of outstanding natural beauty. Make a short detour to visit the Westerbork transit camp where Anne Frank and her family were deported to.
The Cyclist’s Path is not signposted or marked on cycle maps. The guide book Het Fietserpad gives you maps and a description of the route (in Dutch), which are meant to be used together. If your Dutch isn’t good enough to follow the description, we recommend using the guide book in combination with a detailed cycle map or the downloadable GPS tracks.
